Hathaway's Homers Haunt Huskies
ROCHESTER, Minn. - Amanda Hathaway hit two home runs and Jessica Belsterling pitched her second complete-game win in as many days to lead the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to a 5-2 victory over the St. Cloud State Huskies Saturday morning at the RCTC Dome.
It was the second of five games that the Mountain Lions will play at the NSIC/RMAC Crossover Tournament, which pits teams from NCAA Division II's two Central region Conferences, the Northern Sun and the Rocky Mountain Athletic, against each other.
Hathaway hit a solo shot in the second to start the scoring for UCCS (2-4) and a two-run blast in the fifth to complete it. Landry Davis added three hits for the Mountain Lions.
Belsterling (2-1) allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out seven. Chris Saiz (0-1) took the loss, surrendering five runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings.
After Hathaway's first homer gave them the lead in the second, the Mountain Lions doubled the lead as Belsterling's RBI single in the third scored Davis to make it 2-0. In the fourth, Kailey Hernandez singled, stole second, advanced to third on a fielder's choice and scored on an infield single by Davis.
Hathaway followed a Belsterling walk with a home run that scored pinch runner Sara Lafrinere and herself.
Saiz hit a two-run homer in the sixth to keep the Huskies in range, but Belsterling struck out Jordan Schaffer to end the sixth before punching out the first two batters of the seventh. Two batters later, a ground out ended the game.
Jenna Mott will pitch Saturday's second game for UCCS, facing tough Winona State. The starter for the day's third game, this one against Concordia St. Paul, will be a game-time decision.
