UCCS Softball Adds All-American Pitcher
COLORADO SPRINGS - Scott Peterson has vowed that his University of Colorado at Colorado Springs softball teams will not be caught short of pitching again.
The Mountain Lions' coach is a man of his word.
Peterson announced Friday that NAIA All-American pitcher Becca Smith will transfer to UCCS from Mount Mercy College for the 2011 season.
Smith joins incoming freshman Jessica Belsterling and returning sophomore Jenna Mott to give the Mountain Lions what should be a formidable pitching staff for the next few years.
Smith posted almost cartoonish numbers in earning her status as Midwest Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year for 2010. The junior-to-be went 21-3 with a 0.96 ERA and 221 strikeouts while leading the Mustangs to their first MCC regular season title since 1992. She holds the Mount Mercy school record with 553 career strikeouts despite playing just two seasons there.
She then posted a 6-2 mark in posteason play, which included a 5-0 stretch that led the Mustangs to the MCC Tournament title and their first national tournament berth since 1990. She also picked up Mount Mercy's only win in pool play at the NAIA Softball National Championship, a 5-4, 10-inning victory over Union (Ky.).
Smith finished the season 27-5 with a 1.34 ERA in 34 appearances. That's the second-highest win total in school history, and her 48 career wins rank third all-time. In 208 2/3 innings this spring, she walked only 22 batters while breaking her own school record with 298 strikeouts. Smith had 255 strikeouts as a freshman with a 1.92 ERA and a 21-10 record.
She also showed that she can hit, leading the Mustangs with a .743 slugging percentage and hitting .343.
