Free Admission for Youth Softball Players, Picnic May Yield Record Crowd

By Doug Fitzgerald published April 21, 2010

This should be a VERY busy weekend at Mountain Lion Field.

Aside from UCCS' pivotal four-game series against the Regis Rangers, the Four Diamonds Sports Complex will also be playing host to the Pikes Peak Invitational, a huge softball tournament for club teams. Four Diamonds will be host to teams in the 16-18 age range.

As it has done for other sports, UCCS will be giving FREE admission to all uniformed youth team members and their coaches.
Also keeping things hopping will be that the annual UCCS Athletic Department Picnic will be held immediately following Sunday's games. In addition, Saturday's doubleheader will be televised. Finally, Regis usually travels a sizeable contingent. Of the 14 largest crowds at a UCCS softball game, four have been against the Rangers.

With this combination of youth teams, UCCS student-athletes, visiting fans and TV crews swarming the complex, UCCS coach Scott Peterson is hoping that some attendance records could be challenged this weekend. The crowd should easily exceed the biggest this season (155 vs. CSU-Pueblo on March 28), but could also reach for the school's all-time softball attendance record of 379, set on April 22, 2007 against Western New Mexico and was also in conjunction with the student-athlete picnic.
