No. 4 Metro State Sweeps UCCS
DENVER - The Metro State Roadrunners again gave evidence that their No. 4 national ranking is merited as they scored a pair of shutout wins over the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Saturday at Auraria Field.
Metro State improved to 26-3 overall and 22-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with the 8-0 and 12-0 wins, both shortened to five innings due to the NCAA's run rule.
Christie Robinson (11-1) allowed just three hits without a walk to get the win in the opener. Brittany Moss (7-1) surrendered three hits and walked two in the nightcap.
Landry Davis and Christina Blanton had two hits each for UCCS (11-23, 8-17 RMAC). Ashley Jordan and Kailey Hernandez each added one.
UCCS starter Jenna Mott (4-3) kept the Mountain Lions breathing in the opener, sufficiently scattering seven hits over the first four innings to limit Metro State to a 4-0 lead. The Roadrunners broke it open in the fifth inning, though, getting a solo homer by Amber Roundtree, a two-run double by Jenessa Tesone and an RBI single by Jessica Haab.
Metro State kept that momentum into the second game, scoring three times in the first inning, six times in the third and three in the fourth. Stacy Ortiz (4-11) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
Haab went 5-for-6 on the day with two homers and four RBIs. Sarah Rusch was 5-for-7 with two doubles, a homer and four RBIs, while Roundtree was 3-for-5.
The same teams will meet in another twinbill at Auraria Field on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
