Mathewson's Game-Winner, Anastos' Two Dingers Highlight Sweep Over Panhandle

COLORADO SPRINGS - Lara Mathewson's walk-off single gave the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs a 4-3 victory in the nightcap and a doubleheader sweep of the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies Tuesday afternoon at Mountain Lions Field.

Jessika Anastos belted two home runs and Traci Everett added another as the Mountain Lions ran away with the opener 14-2 in five innings.

AFTER Kristen Curlin gave Panhandle State (2-8) the lead with a two-run homer in the first inning, UCCS' Amanda Hathaway answered with a three-run shot in the second. Curlin's solo shot in the fifth tied the game at three.

UCCS freshman Kailey Hernandez slapped a one-out single to center field in the seventh, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, the left-handed Mathewson (also a freshman) went with an outside pitch a drove it to left field, driving home Hernandez and ending the game.

Game 1 had no such drama.

Anastos' three-run homer highlighted a five run first inning. Christina Blanton's two-run single and Everett's two-run homer provided the impetus in a five-run second.

Anastos added a two-run homer in the third and a wild pitch and a throwing error chalked up two more in the fourth. The Aggies could counter only with a two-run shot by Joni Stegman in the fourth.

Stacy Ortiz (1-3) allowed seven hits and walked four while striking out eight to earn the win in Game 2. Sarah McCauley (2-3) gave up three hits and four walks in five innings in the opener.

Mathewson was 4-for-5 with two walks on the day, while Anastos was 3-for-6 with five RBIs. Hernandez, Erin Milburn, Everett, Melissa DeWitt, Hathaway, Blanton and Ashley Jordan each had two hits.

The doubleheader provided the Mountain Lions with a welcome opportunity to pick on somebody their own size. Four of their first seven games were against nationally-ranked teams.
