Mountain Lions picked Ninth, Anastos Named Preseason All-RMAC

By Doug Fitzgerald published January 20, 2010

COLORADO SPRINGS - Jessika Anastos of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Softball Preseason All-Conference Team, the RMAC announced Tuesday. Anastos and the Mountain Lions were picked to finish ninth overall in the 12-team conference and fifth in the East Division in the poll of conference coaches.

Metro State was picked to win the RMAC regular season title, getting nine of a possible 11 first-place votes. Mesa State was picked second, and first in the West Division.

Coaches picked each team's expected finish, omitting their own team, and then those selections were totaled. Metro State had nine points and Mesa State 23. Those two were followed by Regis (39), Colorado State-Pueblo (45), Colorado Mines (52), Adams State (68), Fort Lewis (70), Nebraska-Kearney (75), UCCS and Western New Mexico (91 each), Chadron State (109) and New Mexico Highlands (116).

Despite setting a new NCAA Division II home run record a season ago (0.57 per game), Anastos was neither a unanimous selection nor the RMAC preseason player of the year. That honor went to Regis catcher Alisa Heronema. The preseason pitcher of the year was Metro State's Christie Robinson.

The RMAC softball championships will be played May 6-8. The top team with approximately three weeks remaining in the
regular season and a bid accepted by the RMAC Championships Committee will host the tournament. The top eight teams qualify for the double elimination tournament.
