All-American Anastos Transfers to UCCS from Fort Hays State

COLORADO SPRINGS - Under ordinary circumstances, a coach brings in a player and hopes to develop her into an All-American.

University of Colorado at Colorado Springs softball coach Scott Peterson was presented Wednesday with a decidedly extraordinary circumstance.

Jessika Anastos, a 2008 first-team Daktronics All-American, will join the Mountain Lions for 2009 season after transferring to UCCS from Fort Hays State. The junior-to-be hit .462 this past season with an .825 slugging percentage and a .525 on base percentage. Those numbers ranked 17th, 12th and 27th respectively on the national leaders' lists.

Anastos had a record-setting year for the Tigers in 2008. She set new single-season records at Fort Hays State in batting average, home runs (13), runs scored (45), on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and total bases (132). She tied the single-season record for doubles with 18. Her 44 RBIs were second-most in a single season at FHSU.

"We are very excited to have Jessika join the UCCS softball team," said Peterson. "She has proven that can put up some great offensive numbers in a pitching-dominant conference (MIAA)."

The Daktronics All-American honor adds to Anastos' list of accomplishments this year. She has also been named Daktronics All-North Central Region first team along with NFCA All-North Central Region second team. Anastos was also named the All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association first-team at catcher.

In winning the Daktronics honor, which is voted upon by the nation's sports information directors, Anastos became the first softball All-American at Fort Hays State. The Broomfield High School graduate hit .403 as a college freshman.

"Jessika is a Colorado resident and should really enjoy playing with the current Colorado players we have on our roster as she has played with and against several of them in the past," said Peterson. "We offer a great Business Department and we expect her to succeed in the classroom and on the field as a UCCS student/athlete".
