Softball Team Fifth in Preseason Poll

By Doug Fitzgerald published February 1, 2007

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs softball team was chosen to finish fifth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference according to the annual preseason coachesâ€TM poll which was released Tuesday.

The selection came as somewhat of a surprise for the Mountain Lions, who have finished first, second and fourth in the RMAC the past three years.

Regis received all 10 possible first-place votes in being selected the preseason favorite. Colorado State-Pueblo was tabbed second, followed by Nebraska-Kearney and Mesa State.

RMAC newcomer Western New Mexico was chosen sixth, just four points behind UCCS. The conference expands to 11 teams this season with the addition of Western New Mexico and Chadron State and the loss of Fort Hays State to the MAIA.

UCCS received another jolt when no Mountain Lion was named to the preseason all-RMAC team. Lindsay Shandera led the RMAC and was fourth nationally in on base percentage and Sarah Cleland posted an .875 slugging percentage but neither was given consideration by the conference coaches.
