UCCS Softball Tops RMAC in Academics

By Doug Fitzgerald published September 29, 2006

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs softball team was the top academic program in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 2005-06 and was among the top 50 in the nation according to a National Fastpitch Coachesâ€TM Association report that was published Thursday.

The Mountain Lions ranked No. 45 nationally among Division II softball programs with a team grade-point average of 3.139.

“We are happy to be in the top 50,” said UCCS coach Scott Peterson. “(But) I know we can do better.”

UCCS landed seven players on the RMAC all-academic team this past season, led by center fielder Brianna Workman and her 3.958 GPA in Communication. Also honored for academics were: Kaleigh Beekman, Sarah Brisky, Megan Cushman, Janine Ota, Sonia Reyes and Lindsey Shandera. Since freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for consideration as academic all-RMAC, seven of the 10 Mountain Lions eligible attained the requisite 3.20 GPA.

“Coach always says that classes come first and that we need to get that taken care of before we step on the field,” said Workman. “At UCCS, being a student comes before being an athlete.”

But the Mountain Lions softball team has made a habit out of proving that “student” and “athlete” need not be mutually exclusive. UCCS was 36-16 this past season and 105-47 over the past three seasons â€" during each of which the team had a 3.10 or better GPA.

And if fall play is any indication, expect more of the same. The Mountain Lions are currently 13-0 in fall games with one weekend remaining.
