Softball Ranked No. 7 Nationally

By Doug Fitzgerald published February 2, 2005

Since the end of the 2004 softball season, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs has looked toward Feb. 2 with a mixed sense of anticipation and curiosity. Wednesday, you see, was the day the National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason Division II poll was released.

After a mercurial rise from being unranked to No. 10 nationally during last seasonâ€TMs remarkable run at the South Central Regional Tournament, the Mountain Lions have wondered whether they would be taken seriously in 2005.

The answer was an emphatic “yes.”

CU-Colorado Springs is ranked seventh nationally in the NFCA preseason poll, which is voted on by softball coaches representing the eight regions of Division II.

“Itâ€TMs extremely exciting, but we need to keep in mind that itâ€TMs a preseason poll,” said CU-Colorado Springs coach Scott Peterson. “Weâ€TMre more concerned with the postseason poll.”

The Mountain Lions return every starter from last yearâ€TMs regional runner-up squad. They also added a Division I transfer, pitcher Amanda Ritchie, and a strong freshman class led by Boulder Daily Camera player of the year Sarah Cleland.

Itâ€TMs the highest national ranking ever achieved by a CU-Colorado Springs softball team and matches the second-highest ranking by any team in any sport since the school implemented an athletics program in 1988. The 2002-03 golf team was ranked No. 1 nationally for over two months.
