Women's Soccer Stays Perfect on the Road with Another 1-0 Shutout Victory
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- Despite inclement weather, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Women's soccer team earned another shutout victory to stay perfect in this opening weekend of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
It was cold and raining in Gunnison, Colo. today but even a one hour lightening delay couldn't stop the Mountain Lions from picking up their fifth win of the season. One goal was all that was needed for UCCS (5-0, 2-0 RMAC) to beat the Mountaineers of Western State Colorado University (3-3, 0-2 RMAC) by a slim 1-0 score.
Despite the inclement conditions, the Mountain Lion offense continued their usual relentless attack, outshooting the Mountaineers 21-6. UCCS dominated play for the majority of the game and took a season high 15 corner kicks compared to WSCU's three. The Mountaineer defense held strong on set pieces until sophomore McKenzie Oliver found the back of the net for the game winning goal.
Oliver's goal, her first of the season, came at the 42:21 minute mark in the first half. Senior captain Kia Jeffords took the corner for UCCS and sent a perfect ball in, sailing over WSCU goalkeeper Megan Jedrzejewski before finding Oliver's foot on the back post. Jefford's now leads the UCCS defense with two assists to her credit.
It's surely déjà vu for goalkeeper Kelly Schroeder who made three saves in today's shutout win, the exact same amount she made before earning the 1-0 shutout victory against WSCU in 2012. Recording her eighteenth career shutout, Schroeder has now only allowed two goals in 450:00 minutes of play this season.
UCCS is currently sitting at the top of the RMAC standings tied for first place with Fort Lewis College (5-0, 1-0 RMAC). The Mountain Lions will try for six straight wins for only the second time in program history when they play Colorado Christian University (4-1, 1-0 RMAC) at Mountain Lion Stadium this Wednesday, Sept. 25.
