Win and Men's Soccer is in
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The headline really says it all. Win and they're in. After last night's impressive 5-0 win over Colorado Christian, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team (5-7-3 / 4-6-3 RMAC) controls their own destiny in their quest for the sixth and final playoff spot in the RMAC tournament.
While a win is the only way to guarantee a playoff spot there are other scenarios that can take place that would still allow the Mountain Lions to make the playoffs. With that said, UCCS fans will want to pay close attention to the Adams State vs. Colorado School of Mines game that is set for 11 a.m. in Alamosa, Colo.
UCCS currently has 15 points in the RMAC standings while Adams State trails with 13. A win is worth three points, a tie is worth one and a loss is worth zero.
If Adams State loses or ties then it doesn't matter what UCCS does because the Mountain Lions are safe. But an Adams State win would mean that UCCS needs to win to get in because even a tie, which would leave both teams with 16 points, would give Adams State the final spot due to the RMAC tiebreaker rules which call for head-to-head records. The Grizzles beat the Mountain Lions earlier this season 1-0.
Another game to pay attention to is the Fort Lewis vs. Colorado Christian game were a Fort Lewis loss coupled with a UCCS win would mean that the Mountain Lions claim the fifth seed instead of the sixth seed since UCCS holds the head-to-head tie breaker over Fort Lewis.
The final game of the regular season will be on the road tomorrow at the Rawlings Soccer Complex against CSU-Pueblo (4-12-1 / 3-9-1 RMAC). Match time is set for 2:30 p.m.
UCCS beat CSU-Pueblo earlier this season 3-0 behind a Sebastian Hertzberg hat trick on Oct. 9.
The Mountain Lions also lead the all-time series 27-21-3 having gone 4-0-1 in the last five meetings.
