UCCS takes important game against CCU
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In what was a must win for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (5-7-3 / 4-6-3 RMAC) the Mountain Lions came through with a big time 5-0 win over Colorado Christian University (3-13-1 / 2-10-1 RMAC) at Mountain Lion Stadium Friday night.
The five goals was a season high for the Mountain Lions and the most goals scored by the team since last season's game at CCU when the Mountain Lions scored six goals in a 6-2 win 19 October, 2012.
Multiple players got in on the action in tonight's match with four different players contributing goals. It started early when Sebastian Hertzberg scored in the 17th minute to UCCS on top. Shortly thereafter Mathew Cox drove home a goal when he beat his man one on one to create space and drive home a goal in the 22nd minute.
Justin Miller came off the bench to score the first goal of his career on a header in the 41st minute off an assist from Cort Searls while Cox collected another goal in the 50th minute on pass from Colton Briscoe. The goal was Cox's second of the night.
Liam Levy-Philipp also scored for the first time in his UCCS career when he connected on pass from Marshall Hiner in the 67th minute.
Brandon Costa continued to add to his UCCS records this season with his 14th career shutout moving him into sole possession of second most shutouts in UCCS history.
This game was the first step in what is a big weekend for the Mountain Lions in regards to making the RMAC playoffs next week. The win moves them into sixth place with 15 points on the season. The seventh place team Adams State lost their game at CSU-Pueblo 1-0 and leaves them with 13 points on the season and a chance to still catch UCCS.
