COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A combination of great defense, goalkeeping, and an own goal provided the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team a win in its season-opener against Fort Hays State 1-0 on Friday night at Mountain Lion Stadium.

In a defensive contest the Mountain Lions scored in the 72nd minute on a corner kick by Lindsey Birdseye that glanced off of a Fort Hays State defender and into the net. The Mountain Lion defense held at the end as Fort Hays State fired shot after shot at the end. In the 88th minute UCCS goalkeeper Kelly Schroeder made a save to secure the victory, one of nine she had on the night.

Hannah Levett led the offense with four shots, two that were on goal.
