Mountain Lions Advance to RMAC Semifinals with 1-0 Win Against Colorado Mesa
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (9-8-1) won its first men's soccer playoff game since 1998 and advanced to the RMAC Semifinals with a 1-0 victory tonight against Colorado Mesa (8-7-4) at Mountain Lion Stadium. It's the first appearance for the Mountain Lions in the conference semifinals since 2001.
UCCS controlled the offensive tempo early with a shot off the opening kickoff and corner kick opportunity in the fifth minute. James Roberts scoring the deciding goal in the 17th minute with an unassisted shot in the upper left corner of the goal. It was his fourth goal in the last six games.
The Mountain Lion defense limited the Mavericks to just one shot on goal in the first half and three throughout the game as goalkeeper Brandon Costa earned his fifth shutout of the season. It moved him into fourth in program season records and third in career records with the ninth shutout of his career.
The win sets UCCS up to avenge another 1-0 loss of the season on Friday afternoon with the nation's top-ranked team Regis. It's the sixth time the Mountain Lions will play in the conference semifinals and the first time since the tournament expanded to six teams in 2009.
