Men's Soccer Game with Humboldt State Canceled

published August 21, 2012

ARCATA, Calif. - Humboldt State University President Rollin Richmond announced today the cancellation of the 2012 Jacks men's soccer season after a serious hazing incident involving the team. The University of Colorado Colorado Springs was originally scheduled to compete against the Jacks on Sept. 1, in San Rafael, Calif.

"Given my understanding of what occurred, I am first of all relieved that all of the students involved are safe," Richmond said. "I hope that the team and individual disciplinary actions send a clear message that this was unacceptable. Hazing is not tolerated at Humboldt State, not in athletics and not in any other area."

The incident in question occurred on Aug. 6, and the decision by the Humboldt State President was made after an investigation by the HSU Office of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs along with the Intercollegiate Athletics Office. The decision was made in consultation with HSU Faculty Athletics Representative Jeff Borgeld and the California State University Chancellor's Office.

The contest was to count as a regional contest for the Mountain Lions, who will now only compete in two non-conference, regional games this season. The game will not impact the minimum required number of 10 contests required for NCAA postseason consideration with 14 RMAC games scheduled. The game will likely impact the regional standings for the Mountain Lions based on the criteria used by the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Committee for postseason selection.

UCCS will open the season Aug. 30 at California State-East Bay.
