UCCS soccer teams gain regional rankings

By M.J. Arjomandi published September 6, 2011

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team is ranked sixth in the first NCAA Regional Central Division II Poll of the season, which was released Tuesday.

The ranking is significant because only the top six teams at the end of the season will advance to the NCAA postseason tournament. Two of the past seven seasons a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team has won the NCAA Division II championship.

The UCCS men, meanwhile, climbed to fifth in the regional poll after being ranked seventh in the preseason. RMAC teams have won two of the past six national championships.

The UCCS women outscored their opponents 7-1 and out shot them 42-5 in their first two matches. This has led the Mountain Lions women's soccer team to a 2-0 record for the first time since 2008.

The Mountain Lions offense erupted as senior Candice Buckles and sophomore Agnes Arnadottir both scored a goal in each game. Ashley Hooper has had one goal and one assist. Lindsey Birdseye and Jenna Lubieniecki each also had one goal each. Julia Saenz also contributed to the offense with two assists.
