Mountain Lions settle for tie at Adams State

ALAMOSA - Despite taking 30 shots, 13 of which were on goal, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team was forced to settle for a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon at the ASC Lacrosse and Soccer Field.

Scott Kocel scored the Mountain Lions goal just 7 minutes, 39 seconds into the match. The speedy win beat his man down the right side and knocked a shot that snuck inside the far post. It was Kocel's third goal of the season.

That was the Mountain Lions' second shot of the match. There would be 28 more before the final whistle but none would find the back of the net.

Much of that is creditable to Adams State goalkeeper Michael Miller, who made 12 saves.

The Grizzlies scored the equalizer just before halftime as Cody Sprouse took a pass from Johnny Mercer, took two dribbles and hit it past UCCS goalkeeper Brandon Costa. Costa finished with eight saves.

While UCCS is now 8-8-1 overall and 6-6-1 in conference play, their placement in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference playoffs is still solid. A win over winless Colorado Christian in the season finale next Sunday would clinch the fifth seed (out of six).

UCCS is 0-2-1 in its past three matches and 0-3-1 in its past four road matches.

Adams State is now 3-10-2, 2-9-1 RMAC.
