Mountain Lions lose to Regis on PK
DENVER - A penalty kick in the 20th minute provided the only scoring as the Regis Rangers held on for a 1-0 victory over the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Sunday at the Regis Match Pitch.
UCCS goalkeeper Brandon Costa made the initial save off Martin Maybin's penalty kick but Maybin charged and booted in the rebound.
The Mountain Lions tried to crack a packed in Ranger defense the rest of the match, but could manage just two shots on goal, both of which were stopped by Regis goalkeeper Chris Couperus. The freshman from Fort Collins has two shutouts this season and combined with two others for a third.
Costa was bombarded with shots as UCCS pushed players forward in an attempt to generate offense. The sophomore from Folly Beach, S.C. made 11 saves in the loss.
It was the second time in four losses this season that all of the opponents' scoring came by way of the penalty kick (UCCS lost 2-0 to Midwestern State on Sept. 11 on two PKs). Three of the 10 goals allowed by Costa this season have come on penalty kicks.
