HAYS, Kan. - Brandon Costa made five saves and Matt Friesen scored as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs shut out the Fort Hays State Tigers 1-0 Sunday afternoon.
Costa, a sophomore who has been locked in a battle with Jarod Thomas and Kevin Barthe for the Mountain Lions' starting goalkeeper position, strengthened his resume by recording his second career shutout.
Friesen, a senior who has led UCCS in scoring in each of his first three seasons, knocked home a crossing pass from Max Thomas in the 35th minute. It was Friesen's second goal in as many matches this season and the 27th of his career.
Fort Hays State's Ryan Pakiesser made eight saves as UCCS outshot the Tigers 16-10. Both teams are now 1-1 on the season.
