Friesen's Hat Trick Lifts Mountain Lions 8-0 Over Adams State

By Alex Sommers published October 8, 2010

ALAMOSA - The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs men's soccer team tied the school record for goals in a game and set the record for largest margin of victory with an 8-0 win against Adams State Friday at ASC Soccer Field.

Junior, Matt Friesen had a brilliant game, he had three goals and an assist but arguably the best performance of the night came from senior defender, Mike Mason who scored every time he shot the ball, tallying two goals on two shots and three assists. The seven offensive points for Friesen and Mason are the third most in Mountain Lion single game history.

Other Mountain Lions who added to the lopsided victory were; Carlos Verdugo with a goal and assist, Keenan Forder with a goal, Austin Bell with a goal that was assisted by Ryan Piechowski, and Jaron Stewart who had two assists.

UCCS started the game on fire, scoring just three minutes into the game. They continued the attack by putting two more balls in the back of the net before even twelve minutes had expired. Goals four through seven were scored pretty evenly through out the rest of the first half concluding with Friesen's third score when there was under a minute until half.

Coach Henry Ellis used the second half to get the younger players some game experience. The lone second half goal was Bell's right side score off of a pass from Piechowski.

It wasn't all offense for the Lions though, their defense also had one of their best efforts of the season. The Grizzlies only managed two shots on goal the whole game compared to an incredible fourteen for UCCS. Freshman keeper Brandon Costa also earned his first career shutout and it was also the Mountain Lions' first shutout of the season.

The Mountain Lion's eight goals tied the record set against Ripon (Wisc.) in 1992 and also against Southwestern in 2000.

UCCS improved to 3-8-1 and it seems that their mojo is kicking in just in time for a late season push in their final seven games. The Mountain Lions have three games remaining on their current road trip before they return home on October 17th when they host RMAC power house, Metro State.
