UCCS tabbed seventh in preseason poll
The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs women's soccer team was picked to finish seventh in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in the 2009 RMAC preseason coaches' poll, the conference announced Tuesday.
The Mountain Lions went 5-13-1 overall and 3-10 in RMAC play in 2008, their inaugural season in the sport. They return 14 players from that squad and have also added a strong recruiting class.
Metro State was picked to win their eighth straight RMAC women's soccer championship according the league's head coaches.
The Roadrunners placed three players on the preseason all-conference team, including Becca Mays (San Antonio, Texas), who is the preseason player of the year.
Regis is picked second. Heidi Boersma (Littleton) was tabbed as the preseason defensive player of the year.
There's a tie for third between Colorado Mines and Fort Lewis. Mesa State is fifth, followed by CSU-Pueblo, UCCS, New Mexico Highlands, Colorado Christian and Nebraska-Kearney. The Lopers will play their first ever season of women's soccer this year. Adams State is predicted to finish 11th.
The top six teams in the regular season advance to the RMAC tournament. The first round will be played on Wednesday, November 4. The #3 seed will host the #6 seed, while the #5 seed travels to the #4 seed. The winners of those matches will go to the #1 site for the semi-finals on Friday, November 6. Three weeks prior to the championships the top team in the league at that time with an acceptable bid will host the semi-finals and championship. The finals will be played on Sunday, November 8.
