Saenz's goal not enough as UCCS is beaten by Colorado Christian
LAKEWOOD - Julia Saenz scored in the 74th minute to end a 300-minute scoring drought for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs but the Colorado Christian Cougars got two scores from Jessica Smith to beat the Mountain Lions 2-1 Tuesday afternoon.
Saenz knocked home a crossing pass from Jessica Escobedo at the 73:21 mark to end a scoreless streak that had reached 300 minutes, 48 seconds.
Her score, however, was sandwiched between Smith's goals at the Cougars improved to 4-9. While both teams are members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Tuesday's match was a nonconference contest.
It was the third straight loss and 10th in the past 11 matches for UCCS.
The Mountain Lions had a chance to open the scoring in the 64th minute, but Ashley Collins' penalty kick was stopped by CCU goalkeeper Alison Cox.
Cox's play energized the Cougars. Smith's shot 36 seconds later was blocked and UCCS goalkeeper Amie Kern managed to save the rebound attempt. But CCU maintained the pressure and Smith finally slipped one past Kern at the 65:02 mark. Kimi Wright's crossing pass found Smith deep in the left corner of the box, from where she headed the ball in.
Saenz tied the match at one eight minutes later.
With just over 10 minutes to play, Smith found space in the middle of the box and blasted home the game winner from 20 yards out.
Cox finished with four saves, while Kern had 10 in the loss.
The Mountain Lions continue to be severely hampered by injuries, with defenders Kelby Petry, Jelisa Guy, Lindsay Link and Chelsea George "all former starters" out. They will face 1-14 Adams State at 11 a.m. Sunday at Mountain Lion Stadium.
