Mountain Lions outshoot, but can't outscore, Regis in loss

COLORADO SPRINGS â€" Sterling Copeland scored twice to lead the Regis Rangers to a 2-0 victory over the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Friday at Mountain Lion Stadium.

The Mountain Lions (3-7-2, 1-5-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) outshot Regis 19-14 and had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks, but could not find the goal.

“We outshot them; absolutely peppered them with corners,” said UCCS coach Henry Ellis. “We just couldnâ€TMt put it in the back of the net again.

“Thatâ€TMs been our Achilles heel all season long.”

That Achillesâ€TM heel has the Mountain Lions ranked seventh in the eight-team RMAC in goals scored. It was the fourth time in 12 matches that UCCS had been held scoreless.

Regisâ€TM Wally Fink made seven saves in recording his second shutout of the season. Adam Liszewski made seven saves in the losing effort for UCCS.

Regis improved to 4-6-1 on the season, 3-3 in RMAC play.

Regisâ€TM first goal came, in part, due to a UCCS miscue in the 20th minute. Greg Miley played a corner kick short, and then circled around to get a better angle to serve the pass. The pass back to Miley, though was errant, allowing Regis to clear the ball. It also left UCCS dangerously shorthanded in the defensive end.

Seeing this, Nathan Kafer simply touched the ball forward instead of trying to control it. The speedy Copeland ran onto the pass and into a one-on-one situation with Liszewski.

Copeland scored again in the 33rd minute when a crossing pass pinballed off two UCCS defenders and rolled straight to Copelandâ€TMs feet. He easily knocked in the point-blank shot.

The Mountain Lions will need to shake Fridayâ€TMs match off quickly, since they will play at Colorado State-Pueblo on Sunday with Steel and Silver Series points on the line.

“Itâ€TMs frustrating for us right now,” said Ellis. “Weâ€TMve got to rebound because weâ€TMve got a quick one two days from now.”
