UCCS doesn't need a save to shut out Carthage in exhibition

By Doug Fitzgerald published August 25, 2008

Donny Stone had a goal and an assist and the Mountain Lions recorded a shutout without having to make a save as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs defeated the Carthage Red Men in an exhibition match Monday evening at Mountain Lion Stadium.

The UCCS defense, behind the solid play of Greg Packer, Ryan Buttner, Jaron Stewart and Cameron Cook, allowed nine shots overall but none on goal. Goalkeepers Adam Liszewski and Sean Miller split the shutout.

Ironically, Liszewski did factor into the offense. In the ninth minute, he sent a deep ball over the top that bounced once â€" directly to Stone â€" who headed it over the outstretched hand of Carthage goalkeeper Andy Connor.

That advantage remained static until the 82nd minute, when Stone sent a corner kick to the far post that Ace Van Esselstine collected and knocked home.
