UCCS notches first win of season against Cougars
LAKEWOOD - The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Mountain Lions notched their first win of the 2007 season defeating the Colorado Christian Cougars 3-2 Friday at Cougar Fieldin the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
"Coming off two losses, it feels good to finally get a win, especially against an RMAC team," said Jeff Bettner. "We're 1-0 in the RMAC; that's where we wanted to be.
"We're hoping we can carry some momentum into Sunday's game at Colorado Mines."
The Mountain Lions (1-2) found the net early, scoring in the 11th minute. Greg Packer lifted a shot over the Cougars' goalkeeper Jon Wilkins. Bryan Stoeber got the assist and he wasn't finished yet.
In the 22nd minute, Stoeber received a through ball from Jeff Poburka and was able to finish the breakaway opportunity to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
The Cougars cut the lead to one when Tim Starr was able to bury a penalty kick in the 57th minute.
The Mountain Lions responded quickly when Wade Hood was able to capitalize on an odd-man rush in the 66th minute, putting the Mountain Lions up 3-1. Bettner had the assist on the play.
The Cougars (0-4) answered when Riley Winham scored unassisted in the 73rd minute.
The Mountain Lion defense tightened up for the remainder of the game by not allowing the Cougars a good scoring opportuity over the final 17 minutes.
The Mountain Lions travel to Golden, Colo. to face the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers this Sunday at 2 P.M.
