COLORADO SPRINGS - The Hillsdale Chargers were named the champion of the 2009 Marriott Volleyball Invitational after posting a perfect 4-0 record for the tournament, which concluded Saturday.
The host Mountain Lions finished in second place at 3-1, followed by Wayne State (2-2), Texas Woman's (1-3) and Colorado State-Pueblo (0-4).
Hillsdale and UCCS each had two players named to the all-tournament team, while each of the other three teams had one.
Hillsdale's Ashlee Crowder and Clara Leutheuser each made the squad after posting 56 and 46 kills respectively. Crowder's 4.67 kills per set was the best total by any player in the tournament while Leutheuser's 3.07 ranked third and her 15 blocks were second.
Wayne State's Jennifer Hefner was the block leader at 24 and second in kills per set at 3.69.
Representing host UCCS was setter
Cindy Bathelt, who averaged 10.17 assists, 2.17 digs and 1.17 kills per set. She also recorded 10 blocks. Teammate
Laura Brodie was the runaway winner for best hitting percentage at .419 while posting 34 kills and 13 blocks.
Texas Woman's was represented by libero Kendra Coulson, who averaged a tournament-best five digs per set. Colorado State-Pueblo's Janae Heiser also made the squad with 23 kills and 20 assists.
The all-tournament team was chosen by a vote of the participating coaches.
