The University of Colorado Colorado Springs produced another straight-set (25-18, 25-22, 25-14) sweep of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe when it beat the Adams State Grizzlies Friday night in Colorado Springs.

Sonja Johnson led the Mountain Lions (11-9, 6-5 RMAC) with 12 kills while Nikki Kinzer and Alex Wood contributed eight each. Johnson and Wood also led the team in digs with 13 and 10 respectively. Dominique Davis led the way with 12 kills for the Grizzlies (14-5, 8-3 RMAC).

"Our passing was great and Cindy (Bathelt) was putting the ball exactly where I wanted it," commented Johnson on her performance. "I was able to capitalize."

Kinzer, Wood and Megan Koop contributed five assisted blocks each. UCCS' frontcourt was a strong presence all evening as they compiled 22 assisted blocks compared to the Grizzlies' six.

"Our block did a great job of funneling the balls to where we wanted them to go and getting touches on everything," said Johnson, a senior from Highlands Ranch.

The Mountain Lions rode momentum from last night's sweep of CSU-Pueblo to a quick 14-3 lead in set one.  The Grizzlies made an 8-0 run to bridge the gap to three at 14-11 before a kill by Kinzer stopped the run, and effectively all hope for Adams State in the set as the teams traded points to finish 25-18.

The Mountain Lions never looked back, as they played with an obvious confidence both defensively and on the attack.

"We served really, really well, played inspired defense and did a lot of the little things right," said Coach Keith Barnett. "And that usually leads to points going your way."

The teams played even to 9-9 in set two before a 4-0 run by the Mountain Lions forced Adams State into a timeout. The Grizzlies answered with a 6-2 run of their own to bring the score to 15 all before a UCCS timeout. The Mountain Lions went on a 5-0 run out of the stoppage to push the score to 20-15, but let the Grizzlies come within two at 24-22 before a service error gave UCCS the set.

Set three was tied at five before a 6-0 run by the Mountain Lions forced a timeout by Adams State with the score 11-5. From there, UCCS outscored a distraught Grizzlies team 14-9 to finish out the match at 25-14.

The Mountain Lions look to finish up a three game sweep (in three consecutive nights) of Western Division teams as they take on Western State Saturday.

When asked about the chance at that three game sweep, Johnson said with a smile, "That would be awesome. I know we're ready for it. We want to go out and just play as well as we can."
