UCCS beats Nebraska-Omaha, finishes Colorado Premier Challenge at 2-2

DENVER - Nikki Kinzer had 19 kills to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs to its second win on Saturday, a 3-1 (25-21, 17-25, 28-26, 25-20) victory over the Nebraska-Kearney Mavericks at the Auraria Events Center.

The Mountain Lions (4-4) beat Lock Haven earlier Saturday to finish the prestigious Colorado Premier Challenge with a 2-2 record.

Alex Wood added 11 kills for UCCS, while Sonja Johnson and Jenica Shippy added eight each. Cindy Bathelt had 50 assists, five kills and eight digs. Skylar Lewandowski had a team-best 18 digs.

Abby Sorensen had 26 kills for Nebraska-Omaha (2-10).

Kinzer had six kills in a 25-21 first set win. UCCS opened 13-3 and never looked back. UNO closed to within three but could get no closer.

The second set looked much like the first but with the identities switched. UNO opened an 18-6 lead behind three service aces and three blocks. The Mountain Lions never got closer than five the rest of the way.

After six tie scores in the pivotal third set, UCCS managed a 6-2 run to take a 23-19 lead. The Mavericks answered with four straight, two on kills by Sorensen. A UNO service error put UCCS at its first set point, after which a Sorensen kill tied it. A Maverick hitting error created set point No. 2, but kills by Sorensen and Abby Mach turned the table and put UNO at set point, 26-25.

UCCS coach Keith Barnett called a timeout and whatever he said worked. A Kinzer kill was sandwiched by two Johnson kills as the Mountain Lions scored three straight to take the set 28-26.

The momentum carried over into the fourth set. UNO claimed its only lead at 1-0, but UCCS came back to build a 9-4 lead behind two kills each by Kinzer and Megan Koop. The Mavericks were able to close to within two twice but could get no closer.
