Kephart ('09) Qualifies for U.S. Amateur
FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Former University of Colorado Colorado Springs golfer Alex Kephart will take part in the 2013 U.S. Amateur Championship after his qualifying performance Monday at the Fort Collins Country Club. Kephart will compete in the championship Aug. 12-18 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
Kephart shot a 140 with a 71-69 on the 36-hole course to tie Kyle Danford of Fort Collins for second in the tournament. It will be the first United States Golf Association championship event for Kephart.
"It's unbelievable," Kephart said after the tournament. "I was in a playoff last year in the Mid-Am (qualifying tournament), but I've never made it to a USGA event, so it's unbelievable. I don't know words to describe it."
Kephart helped lead UCCS to the 2005-06 RMAC golf championship and was an Academic All-RMAC selection in his senior season. He's won four Colorado Golf Association Father/Son championships with his dad, Gary. Kephart finished in the quarterfinals of last week's Pikes Peak Amateur to eventual champion Kevin Witte, a 2013 UCCS All-American.
The Country Club was one of the original five charter clubs of the United States Golf Association and has hosted three U.S. Open Championships, five U.S. Amateur Championships, three U.S. Women's Amateur Championships and the 1999 Ryder Cup. This year's championship tournament will mark the 100th anniversary of Francis Quimet's U.S. Open victory on the same course.
