UCCS Qualifies for National Championships with Fourth Place Regional Finish
DuPONT, Wash. - Kevin Witte and Spencer Biersdorff shot scores of 72 to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs to a team score of 290 in the final round and a fourth-place finish at conclusion 2013 NCAA Division II West / South Central Regional Championships today at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash.
The finish qualifies for the Mountain Lions for the NCAA Division II National Championships May 20-24 at the Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa. It's the first trip to the national championships for UCCS since the 2008-09 season.
The Mountain Lions posted a tournament score of 861 for the best tournament of the season and the best team score since March 2012. UCCS will be the only team from the RMAC and South Central Region to compete at the national championships.
Witte finished as the regional runner-up with a tournament score of 208. It's the best tournament of his two-year Mountain Lion career and he finished with 12 birdies in the 54 holes. He finished two strokes off of the leader.
Biersdorff posted a 72 for the second straight day to finish second on the team with a tournament score of 218. He recorded a birdie on hole 10 for the second time in the tournament and finished the tournament tied for No. 31 among the 108 golfers.
Grant Dean and Eddie DeLashmutt both scored 73 in the final round for the final scores for UCCS in the round. Both tied for No. 44 overall with tournament scores of 220, and the score was the best for Dean in the spring season. DeLashmutt opened the final round with two birdies on the first five holes and finished with 10 birdies throughout the three rounds.
Conrad Isley finished the third round with a 74 and tied for No. 54 in the individual standings. He finished the tournament with a season-best 221, and beat out his previous best of 222 set on the same course in April.
The Mountain Lions will be one of 20 teams from throughout the country to compete at the national championships May 20-24. UCCS will be paired with Bellarmine from the Midwest Region and Florida Southern from the South Region when the Mountain Lions tee off in the first round of the national meet at 10 a.m. MDT on the East Course at the Hershey Country Club.
