Mountain Lions Leading RMAC Teams at Thunderbird Invite
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - Spencer Biersdorff shot two strokes under par to tie for third after the first round and led the University of Colorado Colorado Springs in the first day of the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational today at the Wigwam Golf Course near Phoenix. The Mountain Lions are fifth out of 16 teams and are leading the four RMAC teams in the field.
Biersdorff tied for the fourth-best score on par five holes in the first two rounds and finished the first day with eight birdies. He shot 70 in the first round and 77 in the second round to finish the day at three strokes over par with 147.
Grant Dean tied for No. 13 with a score of four strokes over par at 148. He shot for par on 26 of the 36 holes and was even in the second round. UCCS was the only RMAC team with two golfers in the top 15.
Kevin Witte, the defending RMAC Golfer of the Week, tied for No. 23 with a score of 151 for seven strokes over par. Conrad Isley was the final scoring member for the Mountain Lions with a score of 152 and tied for No. 32 overall.
UCCS is seven strokes behind third place Central Oklahoma and Dixie State. Western New Mexico is three strokes behind the Mountain Lions in sixth place.
The Mountain Lions begin the final round Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. MDT.
