#17 UCCS to Open Fall Season at Brickyard

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Instead competing against Division I teams at the Air Force Gene Miranda Invitational, as has been the traditional early-season test for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, the No. 17 Mountain Lions will face several of the top teams in Division II at the Brickyard Invitational in Indianapolis this Monday and Tuesday. The tournament is scheduled to feature eight teams ranked in the top 25, including UCCS.

The Mountain Lions are coming off a top 10 finish at the national championships last season, but will be starting with a young squad to repeat as conference champions. All five golfers from last year's team that won the RMAC championships and qualified for the program's fifth appearance at the national championships either graduated or didn't return.

UCCS will begin the season ranked No. 17 in the GolfWorld/Nike Division II preseason national poll, and is the only RMAC team ranked in the top 25. The Mountain Lions are one of two teams from the South Central Region in the top 25 and the only regional team ranked in the top 20.

The Brickyard Invitational will take place at the Brickyard Crossing Country Club, located on the opposite straightaway from the finish line and main grandstands of Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The University of Indianapolis will host the tournament for the second time after attracting a large number of nationally-ranked Division II teams in the inaugural tournament in 2012. Among the nationally-ranked teams scheduled for the tournament are preseason national favorite Barry, second-ranked Nova Southeastern and fifth-ranked California State-Monterey Bay.

The Brickyard Invitational will be the start of back-to-back-to-back weekends for the Mountain Lions, who will travel to Durango, Colo., on Sept. 22-23, and the Canyon, Texas Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
