Witte Wins Pikes Peak Amateur
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Colorado Colorado Springs All-American Kevin Witte defeated defending champion Ben Krueger 4 and 3 to win the Pikes Peak Amateur Saturday at the Patty Jewett Golf Course. Witte defeated a former UCCS golfer and a golfer who will compete in the RMAC this fall before winning against All-American Sky Conference golfer Krueger.
Witte qualified for the match play with a total of 150 in two rounds of stroke play on July 15-16 and as the No. 10 seed among the 16 qualifiers. He defeated Isaac Petersilie of Coronado High School in the opening round 4 and 3 on Wednesday, and then former UCCS golfer Alex Kephart 5 and 3 on Thursday. Kephart was an Academic All-RMAC selection in his senior season and a member of the Mountain Lions conference championship team in 2005-06.
Witte qualified for the championship flight after he defeated Colin Prater, a golfer who will compete for Colorado Mesa this fall, 3 and 2 in Friday's semifinals. In Saturday's championship match, Witte went 3-up after the first nine holes and 4-up after the first 18 holes. He built up as much as a 6-hole lead against Krueger, the third-place finisher in the America Sky Championships for Northern Colorado, 10 holes into the final 18 holes and secured the win with a birdie on No. 15.
Witte became the first Mountain Lion since 2009 to earn a spot on the PING All-America Teams after he won the RMAC Championships, finished second in the NCAA Division II West / South Central Region Championships and No. 10 at the NCAA Division II National Championships. He was a member of the PING All-South Central Region Team, RMAC All-Tournament Team and All-RMAC First Team.
