Mountain Lions Open Regional Play Monday Morning
DUPONT, Wash. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's golf team, the 2013 RMAC champions, will compete for a spot in the national championships when the Mountain Lions open play at the 2013 NCAA Division II West / South Central Regional Championships at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash.
The top five teams and the top two individuals not on a qualifying team from the combined regional championship will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships May 20-24 at the Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa. The Mountain Lions are playing for their first national championship berth since the 2008-09 season.
The same five golfers who won the RMAC championship two weeks ago will be in the regional championship. The Mountain Lions will begin at hole 10 with tee times ranging from 9:20 a.m. through 10 a.m. MDT, and will be paired with golfers from Sonoma State and St. Edward's.
UCCS will enter the regional championships as the fifth seed from the South Central Region, behind Colorado Mines, Lone Star Conference champion Midwestern State, Abilene Christian and Cameron. The Mountain Lions are one of 12 teams who competed in the Saint Martin's Preview on the same course earlier in the spring season.
Eddie DeLashmutt enters the tournament as the fourth-ranked golfer in the field based on the GolfStat individual rankings with a 72.57 stroke average. The top four individual golfers are come from the South Central Region, and three of them are from the RMAC.
The Mountain Lions improved from receiving five votes to 19 votes in the latest Golf World / Nike Division II national poll after the conference tournament victory, and are within 19 points of entering the top 25. Nine nationally-ranked teams will be competing at the regional championships this week in Washington.
