UCCS Leads by 12, Witte by Three After Day One at RMAC Championships

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - University of Colorado Colorado Springs senior golfer Kevin Witte shot the best round of the tournament in the opening round and finished at seven strokes under par to lead the Mountain Lions to the team lead after the first day of the 2013 RMAC Men's Golf Championships today at the Golf Club at Estrella.

Witte shot 67-70 for a 137 and a three-stroke lead after the first two rounds. It was his best first day since a 136 at the St. Edward's Invitational to open the spring season on March 3. He led the tournament with 12 birdies today and tied for the tournament lead with an average of 3.75 strokes on par four holes.

Eddie DeLashmutt shot a 142 today (72-70) to finish the first two rounds in third at two strokes under par. He's shot at or below par in the last four rounds and in seven of the last eight since April 8.

Grant Dean stands in position for his first top 10 finish of the spring season with 148 (75-73) to tie for seventh overall. He was one of four golfers today to record an eagle and his 4.50 strokes on par five holes leads the tournament.

Spencer Biersdorff provided the final score for the Mountain Lions on the opening round with a 75, and finished in a tie for No. 14 after a 76 in the second round for a 151. Conrad Isley tied for No. 16 with a 152 (76-76).

UCCS holds a 12-stroke lead against Colorado Mines and is position for its first conference championship since 2010. The Mountain Lions have won seven RMAC championships when decided by the spring tournament, and won three more titles when a separate regular season champion was determined from 2007-11.

The second day of the championships begin at 8:30 a.m. MDT with the Mountain Lions on holes 1-3.
