#20 Mountain Lion take 3rd at the Grand Canyon University Invite

By Nathan Gibson published March 28, 2012

Phoenix, AZ: The UCCS men's golf team continued their Spring season by traveling to Grand Canyon University to compete in the Thunderbird Invite this past week.  The Mountain Lion continued to impress, playing against some of the best competition that NCAA Division II has to offer, finishing 3rd overall in the tournament.  Impressively, the Mountain Lions were led by Eddie DeLashmutt who shot 69 in all three of his rounds at the long, tough Wigwam Golf Course.  DeLashmutt finished tied for 1st overall among individual finishers.

The rest of the Mountain Lions scores were as follows (full results can be found in the boxscore):
T1 Eddie DeLashmutt (1) 69 69 69 207
T12 Spencer Biersdorff (2) 71 71 70 212
T14 Grant Dean (3) 69 74 70 213
T56 Mitch Buchner (5) 79 74 70 223
T66 Patrick Skakel (4) 81 70 75 226

The #3 team in D-II, Cal State Stanislaus, won the tournament followed by #10 Western Washington taking second.  The Mountain Lions, as mentioned, took 3rd place, but given that only 11 strokes separated #1 from #3, the Mountain Lions were right in the mix and obviously deserve to be mentioned among the top programs in the country.  The Mountain Lions also finished higher than the #8 and #11 teams in Division II, Abilene Christian (4th Place) and Grand Canyon (5th Place).

The only other RMAC school to compete in the tournament was Colorado Mesa who finished in 14th place and 36 strokes behind the UCCS team.

Up next for the Mountain Lions will be the Fort Lewis Desert Shootout hosted in Palm Desert, CA on April 2-3.
