UCCS Golfers Rally, Take Second at CCU Fall Invitational
LITTLETON, Colo. - Spencer Biersdorff's 3-under par 69 led a spirited rally for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Wednesday as the Mountain Lions climbed two places to finish in second at the CCU Fall Invitational at Raccoon Creek Golf Club.
UCCS came into Tuesday's round in fourth place but shot a final-round 284 (4-under par) to leapfrog Colorado State-Pueblo and Western New Mexico. The Mountain Lions finished with a three-round score of 857 (7-under par), two strokes behind Colorado School of Mines.
The Mountain Lions' final-round score was the best shot by any team on Tuesday and tied for the best of the tournament.
All five of UCCS' golfers shot even par or better on Tuesday led by Biersdorff and Edward Delashmutt (-1). Kevin Witte, Patrick Skakel and Grant Dean all shot even par.
Kyle Grassel of Mines and Michael O'Connor of Western New Mexico finished tied for individual medalist honors with three-round scores of 210 (-6). Sean Robbins of Colorado Mesa was third at 212, while Biersdorff and Witte were among five players ties at 213.
Skakel was third among the UCCS contingent at 214, followed by Dean (220) and Delashmutt (222).
The tournament completed the fall portion of UCCS' schedule. After starting the season with a disappointing fifth-place finish at the Grizzly Invitational, the Mountain Lions rebounded for a solid 11th-place showing at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational where they were the only non-Division I school in the 19-team field.
From there, UCCS took a first and two seconds in their final three tournaments.
