Mountain Lions 12 Strokes Away from Nationals After Two Rounds at Regional
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs needs to find 12 strokes or call it a season.
The Mountain Lions shot a 6-over par 294 the second round of the NCAA West-Central Super Regional, played Tuesday at the UNM Championship Course. UCCS will enter Wednesday's final round 12 strokes away from qualifying for nationals.
Sonoma State leads the tournament with a two-round score of 568 (8-under par). Cal State-Monterey Bay is second at 574, followed by Colorado State-Pueblo and Western Washington, both at 577, and Fort Lewis at 580. Five teams will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship on May 17-20 at Muscle Shoals, Ala.
UCCS is in 12th place at 592 and will need an extraordinary final round to qualify for nationals.
One Mountain Lion who could make it without his teammates is Riley Andrews, who shot a 1-over par 73 Tuesday and is at 1-under par for the tournament. The top three players who are not on a team that qualifies for nationals will compete as individuals. The cutoff for that honor is currently 4-under par.
Chris Shoop led UCCS' effort Tuesday with a 71. Brian Morfeld shot a 74, Spencer Biersdorff a 76 and Michael Tilghman an 83.
Keith Okasaki of UC-San Diego goes into the final round as the individual leader at 6-under par.
