UCCS Can't Find its Fourth, Finishes First Day of Regional in 12th place
ALBUQUERQUE - Riley Andrews shot a 2-under par 70 Monday but the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs again couldn't put together four good scores and finished the first round of the NCAA Division II West / Central Super Regional in 12th place.
The Mountain Lions team score of 298 put them at 10-over par at the UNM Championship Course. Sonoma State held the first-round lead at 283 (5-under par).
Two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams were in second and third, but neither was UCCS, which had its run of five consecutive conference championships snapped this season. Fort Lewis finished Monday in second, four strokes behind Sonoma State, and Colorado State-Pueblo was third at even-par 288. Dixie State and Western Washington were in a fourth-place tie at 290.
The top five teams at the super regional will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship, which will be played May 17-20 at Muscle Shoals, Ala.
The super regional format is different from what the teams have played to this point in that each of the three rounds is being played on separate days. In collegiate tournaments, two rounds are played the first day and one on the second.
Dylan Jackson of Cal State-Monterey Bay and Keith Okasaki of UC-San Diego finished the first round tied for the individual lead at 4-under par. Five golfers were tied for second, one stroke back, and another seven were two strokes off the pace.
Chris Shoop was second for UCCS at 1-over par and Brian Morfeld was third at 4-over. But as has been the case all spring, there wasn't a fourth solid round so the Mountain Lions had to count a 7-over par to their team score. Both Spencer Biersdorff and Michael Tilghman both scored 79.
