UCCS Slips in Final Round, Hands RMAC Title to Fort lewis
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - A disastrous final round at the Wigwam Golf Club on Tuesday left the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in fourth place at the RMAC Spring Invitational and handed Fort Lewis the RMAC Championship, ending UCCS' run of five straight titles.
The Mountain Lions shot a team score of 301 in the final round, dropping 29 strokes to tournament winner Colorado State-Pueblo, 21 to second place Fort Lewis and 14 to third place Colorado School of Mines.
The lost strokes to Fort Lewis were the most damaging. UCCS came into the tournament, the last of four that determine the RMAC champion, with a one-point lead over the Skyhawks. By finishing two places behind Fort Lewis, the Mountain Lions surrendered the title.
UCCS came into the final found at 16-under par after four players, Chris Shoop, Riley Andrews, Brian Morfeld and Spencer Biersdorff, shot a two-round score of 140 on Monday. No Mountain Lions managed to reach par on Tuesday, however, with Andrews coming the closest with a 1-over par 73. He was followed by Morfeld (74), Shoop (75), Michael Tilghman (79) and Biersdorff (80).
Andrews finished with a three-round score of 213 (3-under par), which tied him for 10th individually.
CSU-Pueblo's Chad Novak and Fort Lewis' Gavin Lyons tied for individual medalist honors at 204 (12-under par).
