No. 1-Ranked Western Washington Relegates UCCS to Second Place
GOODYEAR, Ariz. - It took the nation's top-ranked team to relegate the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to second place Tuesday at the Golf Club at Estrella.
The Mountain Lions finished the Grand Canyon Fall Invitational in a second-place tie behind Western Washington, the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II. Matching UCCS' team score of 884 was the tournament host, Grand Canyon.
UCCS' Spencer Biersdorff shot a three-round score of 212 (6-under par), good for second place individually. Western Washington's Dylan Goodwin was two strokes better to walk away with individual medalist honors.
Western Washington had three players shoot even par or better to complete the competition with a team score of 864. The Vikings' even-par team mark was 20 strokes better than UCCS and Grand Canyon.
The team finishes accurately represented the teams' national rankings. Aside from Western Washington's No. 1 spot, UCCS came into the tournament ranked No. 9 and Grand Canyon No. 13.
Texas Wesleyan took fourth place at 890, followed by Colorado State-Pueblo (896) and Fort Lewis (899).
Among UCCS golfers, Brian Morfeld took second. His 3-over par 221 was good enough to tie him for 12th individually. Riley Andrews was next at 225, followed by Chris Shoop (229) and Michael Tilghman (234).
