LA VETA, Colo. - Having built a substantial lead during the first two rounds of the Peaks Classic, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs cruised in Tuesday's final round to win in its first tournament of the season.

The Mountain Lions shot a 4-over par 292 Tuesday to finish with a three-round score of 866, 14 strokes ahead of second-place Fort Lewis and 22 strokes better that third-place Wayland Baptist.

UCCS' Brian Morfeld shot an even-par 72 to hold on to individual medalist honors. His three-round score of 209 (7-under par) was four strokes better that Grand View's Josh Manske and five better than Wayland Baptist's Michael Loppnow.

Morfeld's UCCS teammate, Riley Andrews, took fourth place with a 1-over par 217. Two other UCCS golfgers finished in the top 10 as Chris Shoop and Michael Tilghman each tied for seventh at 220. The Mountain Lions' fifth player, Spencer Biersdorff, tied for 45th in the 76-player field at 233.

The tournament was played at the scenic, 7,085-yard Grandote Peaks Golf Club.

The win put the Mountain Lions in the lead for the 2010-11 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship. The Peaks Classic was one of four tournaments that, combined, will determine the RMAC title. UCCS has won five consecutive RMAC championships.
