Two UCCS Golfers Honored with Top Individual Awards
The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs continued its domination of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's golf by winning its fifth consecutive conference championship and sweeping the individual player awards. UCCS junior Chris Shoop was named RMAC player of the year and teammate Spencer Biersdorff was named freshman of the year.
Both were named first-team All-RMAC. Riley Andrews was named to the all-conference second team.
The RMAC individual honors were based on the combined scores from both the fall and spring RMAC tournaments. These awards are nothing new of the golf team, as a UCCS athlete has received golfer of the year honors four of the past five years. Tyler Bishop (08-09), Todd Napiloski (07-08), and Chase Wortman (05-06) all previously won the award as Mountain Lions.
Biersdorff ran away with the freshman of the year award after following a strong fall tournament by finishing tied for third overall at the spring tournament. Of the past four freshmen of the year, UCCS has taken the award twice. Brian Morfeld was named freshman of the year for the 2007-2008 season.
After the completion of the RMAC Spring Championship Tournament, UCCS clinched its fifth consecutive RMAC men's golf championship, putting the Mountain Lions in good company when it comes to RMAC champion dynasties. Below is a list of current RMAC teams that have won five or more consecutive championships:
