UCCS Picked 23rd in National Golf Poll
The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs golf team is ranked No. 23 in the preseason NCAA Division II Golf World/Nike Coaches Poll. Last season, the Mountain Lions won the West-Central Regional and gained an automatic qualification spot into the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship, where they finished 16th.
Georgia College is preseason No. 1 ranked team with Barry as No. 2 and Columbus State as No. 3, all out of the Southeast Region. Joining UCCS out of the West-Central Region in the preseason top 25 are, Sonoma State (6), Cal State-San Bernardino (9), Cal State-Slanislaus (12), Chico State (15) and Cal State-Monterey Bay (24). The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs is the only West-Central team outside of California ranked in the preseason top 25.
UCCS is returning four of its five players that played in the NCAA Division II National Championship. The returning players are Brain Morfeld (Junior), Chris Shoop (Junior), David Cosel (Senior) and Riley Andrews (Junior).
The Golf Team opens the season with a couple tournaments in the local area. Those tournaments are: the Peaks Classic in La Veta, Colo. on Sept. 13-14, the Falcon Invitational at the Air Force Academy's Eisenhower Golf Course on Sept. 19-20 and the RMAC Fall Tournament in Trinidad, Colo. on Sept. 21-22.
UCCS is coached by Phil Trujillo, who was the NCAA Division II Central Region Men's Golf Coach of the Year last season. Added to the coaching staff this season is Tyler Bishop, who played in the NCAA Division II National Championship for UCCS last year and was ranked No. 1 nationally for a large portion of the 2008-09 season.
