Mountain Lions Finish National Championship Tournament in 16th Place
BLAINE, Wash. - Tyler Bishop birdied two of his final five holes to shoot a 4-over par 75 in Friday's final round as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs finished 16th at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship.
After scoring under 300 in 11 of their previous 12 rounds, the Mountain Lions were unable to break that mark in any of their four rounds at nationals. Friday's 306 was added to previous rounds of 308, 305 and 314 to give UCCS a tournament score of 1,233, 54 strokes off the lead.
Cal State-San Bernardino and Sonoma State, each or which UCCS beat at the NCAA Central/West Regional, tied for first at nationals with matching scores of 1,179. Sonoma State won the tournament on the first hole of the playoff.
A playoff was also needed to determine the individual medalist. Gavin Smith of Indiana University of Pa., won the individual title with birdie on first playoff hole over Kelbi Lee of Ferris State. Each player finished regulation at 5-over par 289.
Bishop's round was the best shot Friday among UCCS golfers. Brian Morfeld shot a 5-over par 76, David Cosel a 77 and Riley Andrews and Chris Shoop each had 78s.
For the tournament, Morfeld led the Mountain Lions with a 22-over par 306. He was followed by Bishop (308), Shoop (309), Cosel (311) and Andrews (318).
