Mountain Lions in Strong Position to Earn Berth to Nationals After Two Rounds
LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs golf team remained strongly in contention for a berth to nationals by finishing Tuesday's second round of the NCAA Division II Central/West Regional in third place.
The Mountain Lions shot a 290, giving them a two-round score of 579, one stroke behind second-place Cal State-Stanislaus. Sonoma State goes into Wednesday's final round leading the tournament at 569. Chico State (586) is in fourth and Cal State-San Bernardino (587) is in fifth.
Since the top five teams at the regional advance to nationals, all eyes are on sixth-place Cal State-Monterey Bay, which enters the final round at 60o and has the least ground to make up in order to catch one of the top five. Hawaii-Hilo (601), Western New Mexico (605), Grand Canyon (606) and Upper Iowa (606) are also within striking distance.
Tyler Bishop's even-par 71 led the way for UCCS on Tuesday. David Cosel, Brian Morfeld and Riley Andrews all shot 73 for the Mountain Lions, while Chris Shoop shot a 74.
