Mountain Lions in Second After First Round of Regionals

By Doug Fitzgerald published May 4, 2009

LINCOLN, Neb. - Tyler Bishop's 1-under par 70 led the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs into a surprising second place after the first round of the NCAA Division II Central/West Regional Monday at Wilderness Ridge Golf Club.

The Mountain Lions go into Tuesday's second round leading eight schools ranked higher than the No. 44 spot occupied by UCCS.

UCCS' team score of 289 trails tournament leader Sonoma State, ranked seventh nationally, by five strokes. Cal State-Stanislaus and Chico State are in a third-place tie at 290, followed by No. 6 Cal State-San Bernardino (294), Cal State Monterey Bay (298), Colorado Christian (300) and Western Washington (302).

Bishop's round was the fourth best shot Monday. Chico State's Brandon Harkin leads all individuals at 6-under par (65). Sonoma State's Jarin Todd and Cal State-Stanislaus' Danny Holt are at 5-under par.

David Cosel and Brian Morfeld each shot a 72 for UCCS, tying them for seventh overall. Chris Shoop provided the Mountain Lions' final scoring round, a 75, while Riley Andrews carded a 78.

The Central/West Regional is a departure from the past. Previously, the winner of each regional would qualify for nationals while the rest of the teams hoped to be awarded one of 12 at large berths. This year, the top five teams in the Regional, regardless of their actual region, will qualify for nationals.
