Bishop Stays Hot, Leading Mountain Lions into 11th After First Round
BLAINE, Wash. - The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs men's golf team finished 12th nationally a year ago. After one round of the NCAA Division II Preview Tournament, the Mountain Lions would look to be in the same company this season.
Tyler Bishop shot a three-under par 68 Monday to lead UCCS into 11th place and put him in a tie for first place individually.
The tournament's second round was also scheduled for Monday. After a 6 ½ hour first round, though, the second was suspended due to darkness and will be completed, along with the third and final round, on Tuesday.
Bishop ended the first round tied with Nova Southeastern's Ben Verz atop the leaderboard. The duo was one stroke ahead of Cal State-Stanislaus' Jonathan Cockerill and Nova Southeastern's Greg O'Mahony.
Not surprisingly considering the best scorers, Nova Southeastern ended the first round in the team lead at 285 (1-over par). Columbus State and Washburn were tied for second at 288.
The Mountain Lions finished the first round with a score of 297.
Brian Morfeld was second among UCCS golfers at 75, while Riley Andrews and David Cosel each shot 77. Only four teams had a discarded score better than Wade Henry's 78 (in collegiate golf, the highest of a team's five scores is not counted towards the team score).
As the name implies, the tournament is a who's who of Division II golf powerhouses. Fourteen of the 20 teams are ranked among the top 25 nationally in the Golf World/Nike Coaches' Poll and five others are listed as also receiving votes. UCCS came into the tournament ranked No. 24.
