UCCS Finishes National Championship in 12th Place

HOUSTON - A promising start Saturday went sour quickly as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs finished the 2008 NCAA Division II National Championship tied for 12th place

Four of the Mountain Lions' five golfers birdied hole No. 1 at Memorial Park Golf Course, dropping them, however briefly, into third place. UCCS came into Saturday's final round tied for sixth.

By the time the Mountain Lions made the turn, though, they had dropped to 7-over par. The final-round freefall continued as UCCS finished the day at 14-over par (294), easily its worst round of the tournament.

UCCS finished with a four-round score of 1,152 (32-over par).

North Alabama and St. Edward's made a final-round charge each shooting 6-under par to catch the third-round leader, No. 1-ranked West Florida, and force a three-way playoff at 9-over par (1,129).

West Florida won the playoff to take the national title.

Todd Napikoski led the Mountain Lions on Saturday with a 1-over par 71 as well as for the tournament. His four-round score of 3-over par 283 put him tied for 11th individually.

Florida Southern's Jude Eustaquio and South Carolina-Aiken's Jeff Goff tied for the individual championship. Each shot a four-round score of 278 (2-under par).

Other UCCS scores Saturday were Brian Morfeld (72), Tyler Bishop (74), David Cosel (77) and Eric Winder (79). For the tournament, Bishop finished at 288, Winder came in at 292, while Cosel and Morfeld each had a 297.
